Kolkata, earlier know as Calcutta, is known for Bengali traditional food and especially the mouthwatering sweets which are popular all over India. Kolkata - The City of Palaces

Located on the banks of River Hooghly, Kolkata is the capital of Indian state, West Bengal. It is one of the important metropolitan cities located in the eastern part of India. Earlier known as Calcutta, it served as the capital of India under the British until 1911. Gov. Gen. Richard Wellesley (1797-1805) contributed a lot in beautifying the city with many public buildings which earned Kolkata the name “The City of Palaces.”

Kolkata has a long and rich heritage. It has been the place which gave birth to modern Indian literary and artistic thought. The buildings of Kolkata also show the artistic character. Most of the buildings are beautified with Gothic, Baroque, Roman, Oriental and Indo-Islamic kind of architecture. Several buildings in Kolkata belong to the Colonial period. Some of the important buildings in Kolkata are the Indian Museum, Victoria Memorial, Academy of Fine Arts and many.

The Bengali cuisine is also one of the well-known cuisines of India. In a restaurant in Kolkata, you will usually have the pleasure to taste rice, machor jhol, rasagolla, sandesh and mishti doi. At the streets of Kolkata, you can take pleasure to taste Beguni, phuchka and the Chinese food.
